7 Signs It Is Time For A New Air Conditioner
Share
An air conditioner is a lifesaver in hot, dry climates. And, while some are more expensive than others, their life span (between 10 and 15 years) makes up for the investment. Older AC models may not last as long, though, especially outdoor AC units.
It’s not always immediately clear that an air conditioner is no longer working as well as it should. If you are unsure whether you should be bidding goodbye to your old air conditioner, the following signs indicate a replacement may be due.
An Increase in Your Energy Bill
Most modern AC units help save energy in a household. If you have an old unit and notice that you pay more than usual for electricity but are not using it more often, it may be time to replace your air conditioner.
Frequent Repairs
Does your air conditioner make strange noises? Have you called a technician more than once in the past six months to fix the unit? This is often a clear sign that an air conditioner is at the end of its life span. Instead of spending more money to keep it going, invest in a new unit.
Inconsistent Temperatures
If you’re sweating even though your air conditioner is on its lowest setting, or some rooms are cold while others are warm, your AC is not functioning as it should. Sometimes, a malfunctioning AC unit also causes excessive humidity levels inside. If the air seems sticky or too dry, it is time for a new air conditioner.
Strange Smells
If you walk into your home from outside and get a strange musty or burning smell while the AC is on, it may be a sign of mold or burning wire insulation inside the unit. Air conditioner mold can lead to respiratory illness and symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and nausea or vomiting. The best way to avoid this is to replace the unit.
Little to No Airflow
You know an air conditioner works when you can feel a strong, clean airflow coming from the vents. If you stand in front of your AC and can hardly feel the airflow, it may be a sign that the compressor is failing. At this point, you should replace the unit instead of trying to get the compressor fixed.
Rapid Cycling
Air conditioners cycle on and off every so often to maintain the set temperature. If you notice your AC starting and stopping more than usual or rapidly, it’s time to replace it. Sometimes, it may be the thermostat that needs replacing, but often, fast cycling indicates a bigger problem.
Water Leaks
If you find water pooling around your unit, or if there is an active leak, it could mean the refrigerant is leaking or the condensate line is faulty. Either way, a new AC is in order.
Replacement Is the Better Choice
If you notice one or more of these signs, it is better to choose replacement over repair. A new, more efficient air conditioner will help you save money on your energy bill and protect your family’s health.
